AMY EDWARDS THE WORD

LOCHINVAR-raised Abbie Cornish has united with Cate Blanchett in a display of Australian female star power at the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival.

The duo paraded for international press and paparazzi to promote their latest film Elizabeth: The Golden Age and paid tribute to another leading lady, Queen Elizabeth I.

During a press conference at the Canadian festival, Blanchett, who plays the Virgin Queen, said she thought Elizabeth I was "utterly inspiring", "deeply intelligent" and a great patron of the arts.

Fellow Australian actor Naomi Watts, who gave birth less than six weeks ago, also attended the Toronto festival at the weekend to promote her new film Eastern Promises.

This is the second time Blanchett has donned the crown of Elizabeth I. She earned an Oscar nomination for Elizabeth in 1998.

Geoffrey Rush reprises his role for the sequel and joining them is Clive Owen as Sir Walter Raleigh.

Cornish plays Elizabeth Throckmorton, Sir Walter's secret wife and one of Queen Elizabeth I's ladies-in-waiting.

The film was shot in London in April last year and opens in Australian cinemas on November 15.

It is not the first time Cornish has featured at the Toronto festival.

Last year her first Hollywood film A Good Year, starring Russell Crowe, premiered at the festival as did her Australian film Candy.

Cornish, 25, shot to fame in Australia in 2004 with the award-winning film Somersault.

Cornish, who regularly returns to the Hunter where her family is based, was spotted at the Groovin' The Moo Festival at Maitland in May cheering on fellow Hunter exports Silverchair.
