Tenacious D - Jack Black's comedy-acoustic-rock duo with actor buddy Kyle Gass - have made a movie and they're touring to promote it. The Pick of Destiny, which also stars Meat Loaf, hits Australian cinemas on January 11 and Tenacious D play the Hordern Pavilion on January 16.

You may have guessed that alt-rock superstars Tool and Muse are playing next year's Big Day Out, after both bands announced side shows close to Australia Day, but we now have confirmation of the first wave of acts. From the US, the big names joining the aforementioned include synth-loving indie lords The Killers, electroclash perv Peaches, emo pin-ups My Chemical Romance and evergreen garage-rockers The Violent Femmes. Australasian representatives include Jet, the increasingly huge Eskimo Joe, the barking-mad Sleepy Jackson and hip-hop homies Scribe and The Herd. New Zealand's The Datsuns, who rose and fell spectacularly on the new-rock wave,

are back with an intense rock album, Smoke & Mirrors. They play the Gaelic Theatre in Surry Hills on November 21.

Expect demonic screaming when Norway's black metal band Satyricon play the Metro Theatre on December 5.

Dinosaur guitar hero Eric Clapton has sold out two Entertainment Centre shows, and will play a third gig there on February 1.

Berlin electro-clash act Chicks On Speed return to play Rebel Rebel at Home on November 25. Oregon folk-rocker Sarah Dougher plays the Vanguard on November 26.

Britpop never-weres The Bluetones have cancelled this month's Annandale Hotel gigs but promise to reschedule next year. Refunds are available.

Ed Kuepper, one-time Saint and Laughing Clown, plays a four-week Wednesday residency at the Vanguard from November 8. The Black Sorrows, Joe Camilleri's most successful incarnation, are touring on their first album in eight years. They play the Basement on November 15 and Blacktown RSL on November 17.

Toni Collette unveils her laidback pop at the Basement on November 9, @Newtown the next night and Cronulla's Brass Monkey on November 12.

Perth cabaret-thrash band Snowman play Spectrum on October 27. Melbourne rockers The Inches launch their latest EP at Candy's Apartment in Kings Cross on October 20. Sydney pretty pop boys Gabriel's Day are at Bar Broadway

on November 18.

London's Basement Jaxx will play Bondi Beach's New Year's Eve party, Shore Thing. Complete with 18-piece band, they'll perform house, disco, soul and breaks. Frenchman Bob Sinclar will mix up house, disco and electro.

Los Angeles instrumental group Breakestra perform hip-hop, deep funk, soul and old-school breaks at the Forum in Moore Park on November 17. Scandinavian hip-hop producer Freddie Cruger also appears.

Miami turntablist DJ Craze spins drum and bass and hip-hop at Home on October 19. Detroit's Kevin Saunderson drops techno at the Chinese Laundry on October 14.

@Newtown is closing its second-floor performance space to gigs on December 1, opting to fill the substantial area with poker machines. The room's operator, Century Venues, which also runs the Enmore and Metro Theatres, plans to take live entertainment further down Enmore Road, past the Vic on The Park to the Factory Theatre on Victoria Road, Marrickville.

The Factory will have an eclectic mix of live music, DJs, theatre and cabaret.

The opening on December 2 has London's Talvin Singh, known for his fusion of Indian bhangra and drum and bass.

Newtown's suavest venue, The Vanguard, celebrates its third birthday this month, with Alex Lloyd (right) playing there on October 19.
